The Artist as Producer: Russian Constructivism in Revolution

by: Maria Gough
The Artist as Producer reshapes our understanding of the fundamental contribution of the Russian avant-garde to the development of modernism. Focusing on the single most important hotbed of Constructivist activity in the early 1920s--the Institute of Artistic Culture (INKhUK) in Moscow--Maria Gough offers a powerful reinterpretation of the work of the first group of artists to call themselves Constructivists. Her lively narrative ranges from famous figures such as Aleksandr Rodchenko to others who are much less well known, such as Karl Ioganson, a key member of the state-funded INKhUK whose work paved the way for an eventual dematerialization of the integral art object.

Mikhail Larionov and the Russian Avant-Garde

by: Anthony Parton
A revolutionary multi-media artist and flamboyant personality, Mikhail Larionov galvanized the art scene in the early twentieth century, striving for a truly Russian style of art to rival the avant-garde movement of Europe and setting the stage for Russian constructivism. With his life-long partner, Nataliya Goncharova, he led his generation in exploring mysticism and shamanism and sparked a counter-culture that flourished in the cabarets of Moscow. The development of his career, however, has long eluded the grasp of historians, partly because Larionov, ever conscious of his role in art history, backdated many of his paintings, set designs, and graphic works.

"Ogonyok" by El Lissitzky - Russian Avant-Garde

The Printing plant of "Ogonyok" magazine designed by El Lissitzky is likely to be the only extant building based on the blueprints of this master. Located at 55°46′38″N 37°36′39″E / 55.777277°N 37.610828°E / 55.777277; 37.610828 17, 1st Samotechny Lane, it is Lissitzky's sole tangible work of architecture. It was commissioned in 1932 by Ogonyok magazine to be used as a print shop. In June 2007 the independent Russky Avangard foundation filed a request to list the building on the heritage register. In September 2007 the city commission (Moskomnasledie) approved the request and passed it to the city government for a final approval, which did not happen. In October 2008, the abandoned building was badly damaged by fire. But next door developer "Inteco" has started preparations for construction of a new block of flats for the Film- Makers Union.

Russian Avant-Garde - Rodchenko & Shukhov

Art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon travels through time to unlock the world of Russian art. Andrew Graham-Dixon looks at examples of the work of Alexander Rodchenko. But best of all is a ride up the Shukhov radio tower, an amazing construction built by the engineer Vladimir Shukhov between 1919 and 1922. If it's not quite as ignored as AGD suggests (its restoration is after all the focus of a major UNESCO campaign) it is still an astonishing construction that is wonderfully well filmed here. www.illuminationsmedia.co.uk «Lord Foster fires up campaign to save rusting Russian radio tower» - guardian.co.uk www.guardian.co.uk www.shukhov.org Architect brands structure as a work of 'dazzling genius' and inspiration that must be saved. From a distance it looks a bit like an upturned wastepaper basket, soaring over the concrete skyline of southern Moscow. The Russian capital's unique Soviet-era radio station was built in 1922 to spread the message of revolutionary communism around the world, but it is badly neglected and suffering from corrosion. Now British architect Lord Foster has backed a campaign to save the 150-metre-high steel tower designed by the engineering genius Vladimir Shukhov. In an open letter, Lord Foster describes the tower as "a structure of dazzling brilliance and great historical importance". Calling the structure Shukhov's masterpiece, Foster says it is the "first major landmark of the Soviet period". Made up of a delicate lattice structure, the tower has ...

Alexandr Ovcharov. Russian avant-garde artist

Russian avant-garde artist Over the course of 12 years in Europe, Alexandr Ovcharov has had more than 25 personal exhibitions. For a long time, he lived and worked in Austria, with his work studio/exhibition hall across the street from the Vienna Academy of Painting. Ovcharov has also had personal exhibitions in museums, cultural centers, prominent churches, major banks, and historical private castles. The Minister of Culture of Lower Austria, Prof. Dr. S. Nasco, personally commissioned Ovcharov to create the painting ,"St. Polten, Twenty-first Century", for the presentation of the European Union Forum and permanent exhibition at the city's state museum. The Bishop of Austria, Kreuz, suggested that the artist donate his work for permanent display at the altar of the Cathedral of Vienna. Having gained recognition from the highest European cultural circles, refusing all flattering proposals and having received from the Austrian Government in gratitude for his contribution to the cultural development of Europe an indefinite Schengen visa, Ovcharov returned to his homeland. For the artist, the daily search for inspiration opens new mysteries of creativity. The works of Ovcharov continue to awe viewers with their strikingly organic and constructivist qualities. The artist interprets the concepts behind his work in this way: "Time is the infinity of the structures of free spaces. Time is the Universe from its beginning to its end. The time fits in itself an infinite number of ...
